About Lana
Lana began her vocal training during high school and at the age of 16 she won 1st place in the Washington All State Solo Competition (Mezzo-Soprano division). She earned a bachelor's degree in classical vocal performance from the University of Arizona, where she had leading roles in a range of opera and music theater shows. Lana then completed graduate studies in Opera Performance and music education at the Eastman School of Music in New York.
During her time at Eastman, Lana felt called to use her musical training to help others. She became an early childhood music teacher and fell in love with teaching and supporting kids with special needs. In 2014 Lana obtained a Master's degree in Medical Speech Language Pathology from the University of Washington. She has worked as a Pediatric Speech Langauge Pathologist (SLP) since that time, with a passion for using music to support kids who have difficulty communicating. Lana also creates music-based educational videos to help kids learn speech and language skills. You can find these videos on her educational youtube channel, Musical Speech.
As a professional vocalist in the Seattle area, Lana has sung with the Emerald Ensemble, Solaris Vocal Ensemble, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Mercer Island, Epiphany Episcopal Parish Choir, and others. She has also worked as a session vocalist with Mirrorsound studios and recorded multiple pieces by the composer David Hahn.
Lana also writes her own songs, and she recently released her first album of original music, Hymns to the Sea. She is married to professional trumpeter Brian Shaw, and they live near Seattle with their 2 sons and ridiculous dog Ernie.
